    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg!

    Upon arrival in South Africa, make your own way to your hotel in Johannesburg and check in for your 3 night stay. Your base for your stay in Johannesburg is the district of Sandton, known as ‘Africa’s richest square mile’. Sandton is known as one of the safer areas of the region and a popular choice of Gullivers over many tours to South Africa. 

    This evening the group will get together with Gullivers Staff for Welcome Drinks. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa.

    Sandton (Johannesburg)

    Day at leisure in Sandton. Whilst here you are certain to find yourself in Nelson Mandela Square with its many cafe's, bars and restaurants or why not book onto one of our below optional excursions.

    This evening join us for one of our Big Events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

    You are invited to join some famous faces from the world of Rugby and previous Lions tours for an evening of lively discussion & insight into the current tour.

  • Day3

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg, there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we'll transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick-off and after the match finishes, we will transfer back to the hotel.

    Cape Town

    Today we leave Johannesburg and head to the airport for the flight over to Cape Town. Upon landing in Cape Town we will make the short transfer (approximately 45 minutes) to the hotel for a 7 night stay. Cape Town is a magical city with a beautiful coastline, fantastic waterfront and the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain. The President hotel enjoys a fantastic location in Bantry Bay. Bantry Bay is a perfect spot for an extended stay in Cape Town both overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and its close proximity to central Cape Town and the V & A. This is likely to be a popular spot for many Lions fans.

  • Day5 - 8

    Cape Town

    You have the opportunity to explore a little further afield and head over to stunning Camps Bay, the perfect spot for sundowners at one of the many bars/restaurants with ocean front views. If you are looking to enjoy live sport look no further than Mojo Market in Sea Point, a short 1km taxi/Uber ride from your hotel. Here you will find a variety of local food vendors all under one roof with live music and plenty of big screens showing live sport. Or, why not book onto one of our optional excursions.

    Today is a day of celebration as all of the Gullivers Tour groups get together to enjoy an afternoon of socialising, drinks and the true spirit of rugby touring. For those that were with us in Auckland in 2017 this was a tour highlight and you can be sure of lots of singing, mingling and entertainment. 

    Gullivers Big Events – Gullivers Festival

    After a leisurely morning join us at the Gullivers Festival where we will all come together in one big celebration of Rugby and celebrate the food and wine of South Africa. We will be joined by some well-known faces from previous Lions tours & enjoy the build up to the 2nd Test Match of the Series.

    Match Day

    Today is Cape Town's turn to host a test match, the pivotal second game of the series. So much has happened in game 2 in past series, the anticipation of what can happen is what builds the excitement. We will transfer from the hotel the short distance to the stadium and back after the game.

The hotel is set in the exclusive and wind-free Bantry Bay, just 7 km outside the centre of Cape Town, offering fresh sea air and panoramic mountain and ocean views. If you don't want to leave the hotel there is an enticing selection of restaurants, bars and lounges within the complex. Alternatively, Bantry Bay and nearby Sea Point are great for local eateries and excellently located in the city half way between the famous V&A Waterfront and the first class beaches and eateries of Clifton and Camps Bay.

DINOKENG BIG 5 SAFARI HALF DAY TOUR

DINOKENG BIG 5 SAFARI HALF DAY TOUR 23 JULY

Depart your hotel early morning for a 90-minute transfer to the Dinokeng Big 5 Safari, a large wildlife sanctuary that covers an area of approximately 21,000 hectares. Situated within the boundaries of a large metropolis, the Dinokeng Game Reserve has the potential to become a model for future conservation where people and wild animals live in harmony.

On arrival you will embark on a private game drive in small groups with qualified rangers and trackers in open safari vehicles. You will be taken to the best areas for spotting lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, cheetahs, and hippos! In addition to these species, look out for giraffes, elands, kudus, impalas, zebras, wildebeests (Gnu), red hartebeests, warthogs, black-backed jackals, crocodiles, ostriches, hyenas, and if you are very lucky the occasional leopard.

4WD Safari vehicles are a great way to be able to traverse over 8,500 hectares of indigenous bush vegetation increasing the chances of good animal sightings.

JOHANNESBURG CITY HALF DAY TOUR 23 JULY

£45 per person

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

On this tour you will experience highlights of Cape Town, starting with a visit to the summit of Table Mountain, South Africa’s most famous and prominent landmark, and one of New 7 Wonders of Nature, on an aerial cableway*.  The tour then continues on to visit the oldest colonial building in South Africa, The Castle of Good Hope, bastion fort built in the 17th century, where you will be able to view art and photography exhibitions that depict the historic start of the city.

The tour moves on to Company Gardens, before transferring to Bo-Kaap, a former township known for its colourful and bright painted buildings.

The final stop of this half day tour is a visit to Dimond Works to discover the history of the diamond and gold trade in South Africa and witness the art of diamond cutting and the careful craftsmanship of jewellery manufacturing.

(*Please note, during adverse weather the cable car may be closed, and you will have the option to return to the mountain or have a refund for this part of the tour, equally during good weather more time may be spent on the mountain than other parts of the other tour).

This full day tour is an ideal way to see the highlights of the Cape Peninsula. After being picked up from your hotel you will travel along the Atlantic seaboard coastal road with the pristine white beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay with their soft white sand and azure blue water.  The formidable 12 Apostles Peaks rise above the road on one side, while sheer cliffs and incredible rock formations drop into the icy Atlantic Ocean on the other side. There is no doubt the coast of the Cape peninsula offers magnificent scenery with its great biodiversity

You will arrive at the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay where you will take a half hour boat trip to Duiker Island to see a Cape Fur Seal colony. If open (weather permitting), the tour will continue via Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most stunning roadways in the world.

Your tour continues to the Cape Point Nature Reserve and the tip of the Cape Peninsula that has captivated travellers for centuries, where you have the opportuniry to go up the funicular at the point.  The return journey to Cape Town takes you along the False Bay coast, visiting the colony of rare African Penguins at Boulders Beach and passing through the naval village of Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. Your last visit will be made to the internationally acclaimed Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden before returning to the hotel.

The day starts with a one-hour coach transfer to Franschhoek, where you will board the wine tram. Journey by tram to a local wine estate where a knowledgeable wine guide weaves the facts, figures and scientific aspects of winemaking into interesting stories about Franschhoek’s history of wine and culture.

During this engaging and interactive experience, you will be guided through, and have an opportunity to sample, the subtle tastes of terroir, as well as learn about the local grape varieties, cultivars and the aspects of viticulture which are unique to Southern Africa.

A tour of the estate wine cellar will be followed by a specially curated three course lunch at the estate restaurant. In the afternoon, you will visit two additional Franschhoek wine estates, enjoying a premium wine tasting at each estate.
