ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK FULL DAY TOUR 8 JULY

ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK FULL DAY TOUR 8 JULY

£99 per person

Depart your hotel just after breakfast for the 1 ½ hour journey to Addo Elephant National Park. Addo is the third largest national park in South Africa, and home to the densest population of elephants in the world. The original section of the park was created in 1931, when less than 20 elephants remained in the area. Today this finely tuned ecosystem is a sanctuary to over 450 elephants along with lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, a variety of antelope and zebra species, as well as the unique Addo flightless dung beetle!

On arrival you will transfer to an open safari vehicle for a game drive. After a morning of keeping your eyes peeled for elephants, surprisingly invisible for their size, there will be a stop for lunch and a comfort break. After lunch you will transfer back to closed vehicles as you continue through the park before returning to Port Elizabeth (please note the order of the open and closed vehicle drives before and after lunch may change depending on arrangements on the day).

WHALE DOLPHIN AND PENGUIN ISLAND CRUISE HALF DAY TOUR 8 JULY

WHALE DOLPHIN AND PENGUIN ISLAND CRUISE HALF DAY TOUR 8 JULY

£95 per person

Depart your hotel after an early breakfast for the quick transfer to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club in the Port Elizabeth Harbour, where you will board a catamaran to see the whales, dolphins and African Penguins on St. Croix Island and Brenton Island.

The whale season reaches its peaks in July/August when humpback whales head up the East coast of Africa towards their breeding grounds. Southern right whales can also be seen from July to October as they enter the safety of the bay to give birth and are the most frequently observed whales along the South African coast. Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins are the most frequently observed dolphins in the bay and can be spotted all year round, in groups from 10-400. These playful dolphins are mostly found in shallow waters either near the beaches or around St Croix Island, and tend to come right up to the boat and ride along in the bow waves.

St. Croix Island is home to 22,000 breeding pairs of African penguins, the largest breeding colony found in Africa. The St. Croix Island group, along with the Bird Island group, became part of the Addo Elephant National Park, allowing rangers to patrol the islands in aid of conservation efforts to protect the African penguin population. As they are Marine Protected Areas, please note that you are not allowed to actually go on to the islands. Light refreshments and snacks are served during the cruise and you will return to the harbour by 1200hrs.

ST LUCIA AND ISIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK SAFARI FULL DAY TOUR 11 JULY

£170 per person

Depart from your hotel before breakfast, for the 3-hour journey to St Lucia. This full day tour will take you on an exploration of St Lucia now known as iSimangaliso Wetland Park which lies on the edge of KwaZulu-Natal in the beautiful region known as the Elephant Coast. The incredibly beautiful series of beaches, coral reefs, lakes, swamps, wetlands, woodlands, coastal forests and grasslands form the first of eight South African UNESCO World Heritage sites.

After arriving in the beautiful coastal town of St Lucia you will visit The Crocodile Centre, the centre contains a series of displays that provide information on the breeding, feeding, anatomy, general ecology and distribution of this prehistoric and now protected reptile.

Having learnt about crocodiles the next stop on the tour will be a two-hour educational and enjoyable estuary cruise where you are almost guaranteed to see hippos and hopefully a few crocodiles and birds. The game reserve surrounding the estuary is home to 4 of the Big 5, only missing the lion. In fact, iSimangaliso Wetland Park is so biodiverse, it supports more species of animal than the Kruger National Park, despite being only the third largest park in the country. After the boat cruise you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch in the small town of St Lucia and will have some time to explore the town before the transfer back to your hotel in Umhlanga.

ISANDLWANA AND RORKE’S DRIFT BATTLEFIELDS FULL DAY TOUR 11 JULY

£160 per person

Travel and storytelling blend seamlessly on this compelling journey to the historical Anglo-Zulu Battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. Departing your hotel before breakfast for the drive across KwaZulu-Natal, the first stop of the day after approximately 2 hours is at Fort Noquai, a beautiful old fort originally created in the middle of the Dlinza Forest in eShowe in 1883.

After a comfort break your journey continues for another 2 hours to the site of the Battle of Isandlwana. Now an eerie, isolated hill, marked by white boulders for the graves of the fallen British soldiers, on 22 January 1879 a British force stationed next to this hill found themselves opposed by some 20,000 Zulu warriors, well-versed in the art of war and under orders to show no mercy. Considered one of the British Army's worst military disasters what followed was a bloodbath.

The tour continues to Rorke’s Drift Hotel where you will enjoy lunch and an introduction to the Battle of Rorke’s Drift. After lunch you will tour the battlefield, where a large contingent of Zulu warriors broke off from their main force during the final hour of the British defeat at Isandlwana, diverting 6 miles to attack Rorke's Drift later that day and continuing into the following day. Just over 150 British and colonial troops defended the station against attacks by 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu warriors. After a fascinating tour you will return to your hotel with a new sense of knowledge of the Anglo-Zulu war and the beauty of KwaZulu-Natal.
