    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg!

    Upon arrival in South Africa, make your own way to your hotel in Johannesburg and check in for your 3 night stay. Your base for your stay in Johannesburg is the district of Sandton, known as ‘Africa’s richest square mile’. Sandton is known as one of the safer areas of the region and a popular choice of Gullivers over many tours to South Africa. 

    This evening the group will get together with Gullivers Staff for Welcome Drinks. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa.

    Match Day

    This evening the British & Irish Lions take on the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria. We will transfer from the hotel in Sandton to the stadium and back again after the game. The transfer should take about 45 minutes and is the fifth and final game for the Lions ahead of the 3 test series against the World Champion Springbok side

    Day at leisure in Sandton. Whilst here you are certain to find yourself in Nelson Mandela Square with it's many cafe's, bars and restaurants.

  • Day4 - 6

    Safari (Pilanesberg National Park)

    Today we leave Sandton and drive approximately 3 hours into the Pilanesberg region for 3 nights on Safari. A bucket list for many, the opportunity to enjoy a safari in South Africa is sure to be a trip highlight. Staying for 3 nights at the 5 Star Ivory Tree Game lodge in the malaria-free Pilanesberg Game Reserve you will have the opportunity to enjoy safari drives with your guide in the Big 5 territory. There are two daily game drives included during your stay as well as all meals, teas, coffees and snacks. Outside of the Game Drives enjoy the facilities at the lodge and relax as hard as you like whether that be with lazy afternoon naps or enjoying the optional activities that you can book on-site (additional costs)



    The lodge itself will have their own guidance on tipping their staff including the professional guides but it's widely acknowledged that if you think the service has been good it is advised you should tip directly at the resort as the staff rely on gratuities. Gratuities are not included in the price and are left to the discretion of the individuals.

  • Day7 - 8

    Sandton (Johannesburg)

    This morning we depart the Safari Lodge and head back to Sandton for a 3 night stay. We head back to Protea Balalaika so you are familiar with the area already and can settle back in.

    Included in the tour on Thursday evening is a group dinner, your tour manager will share more information about location ahead of time.

    On Friday evening join us for one of our big events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg, there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we'll transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick-off and after the match finishes, we will transfer back to the hotel.

aha Ivory Tree Game Lodge lies in the heart of the malaria-free Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The reserve is set within the crater of an ancient volcano – one of the largest of a very rare formation, where the Big 5 now roam, a mere 2 hour drive from Johannesburg. Surrounded by plains and hills, this luxurious lodge boasts an outdoor pool and spa. The thatched rooms are elegantly furnished with African themes. This hotel is inclusive of breakfast and dinner - as well as two game drives per day and lunch.

We chose this hotel because:

Depart after breakfast and travel about an hour to the Maropeng Cradle of Humankind.  The Cradle, so named because it was the earliest area in which evidence of our ape-like ancestors were discovered, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Spend a couple of hours learning about the origins of humankind and take a journey through the various stages of Earth’s creation on an underground boat ride followed by the evolution of humankind which is illustrated through fun and interactive displays and games. In addition to this, you will be provided the rare opportunity to view original hominid and dinosaur fossils. The exhibition centre is housed in the Tumulus, a unique architectural structure resembling an ancient burial mound.

Following this, enjoy lunch at Tumulus restaurant, situated in the Maropeng Visitor Centre and boasting spectacular views of Gauteng. You will then board the coach for a short 10-minute drive to the Sterkfontein Caves, famously known as the place where the skull of the oldest pre-human specimen was discovered and a UNESCO World Heritage site* before returning to your hotel.

*Not recommended for those who are asthmatic or claustrophobic.

You will be collected from your hotel before breakfast and transferred approximately 30 minutes to our first stop, taking in the Union Buildings in Pretoria and perhaps posing for a photo with the statue of Nelson Mandela. After a brief visit you will continue your journey through the outskirts of Johannesburg to the historical township of Soweto via Pretoria City.

The tour will stop at Vilakazi Street where you can sample some local cuisine. From there you will depart for a short visit to Standard Bank Ferreira Mine Stope before travelling to Maboneng via the Mining District – another photo opportunity!

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After an hour of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.
