    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg! Your base for your stay in Johannesburg is the exclusive precinct of Melrose Arch, in the district of Melrose. Melrose Arch precinct is known for its fashionable and vibrant atmosphere with high end fashion stores, café culture and fine dining. Upon arrival in South Africa, make your own way to your hotel in Johannesburg and check in for your 3 night stay

    After settling in the group will get together with your Tour Manager for Welcome Drinks. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa. Then later this evening join us for one of our Big Events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

  • Day2

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg, there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we'll transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick-off and after the match finishes, we will transfer back to the hotel.

    Melrose Arch (Johannesburg)

    Day at leisure in Melrose Arch. With plenty of facilities onsite including a pool and bar you are welcome to relax and recover after the flight at the hotel or get to know Melrose Arch precinct. For those looking to explore a little the vibrant Nelson Mandela Square with its many cafe's, bars and restaurants is just a short taxi ride away.

  • Day4 - 6

    Safari (Pilanesberg National Park)

    Today we leave Melrose Arch and drive approximately 3 hours into the Pilanesberg region for 3 nights on Safari. A bucket list for many, the opportunity to enjoy a safari in South Africa is sure to be a trip highlight. Staying for 3 nights at the 4 Star Bakubung Bush lodge in the malaria free Pilanesberg Game Reserve you will have the opportunity to enjoy once daily safari drives with your guide in the Big 5 territory. The daily game drive is included during your stay as well as breakfast and dinner. Outside of the Game Drive enjoy the facilities at the lodge and relax as hard as you like whether that be with lazy afternoon naps or enjoying the optional activities that you can book on site (additional costs may be payable for additional activities)

    Tipping

    The lodge itself will have their own guidance on tipping their staff including the professional guides but it's widely acknowledged that if you think the service has been good it is advised you should tip directly at the resort as the staff rely on gratuities. Gratuities are not included in the price and are left to the discretion of the individuals.

    Cape Town

    This morning we depart the Safari Lodge and head back to Johannesburg and to the airport for your flight across to Cape Town. Upon landing in Cape Town, we will make the short transfer (approximately 45 minutes) to the hotel for a 7 night stay. Cape Town is a magical city with a beautiful coastline, fantastic waterfront, and the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain. The President hotel enjoys a fantastic location in Bantry Bay. Bantry Bay is a perfect spot for an extended stay in Cape Town both overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and its close proximity to central Cape Town and the V & A Waterfront. This is likely to be a popular spot for many Lions fans.

    Cape Town

    Today is a day of celebration as all of the Gullivers Tour groups get together to enjoy an afternoon of socialising, drinks and the true spirit of rugby touring. For those that were with us in Auckland 2017 this was a tour highlight and you can be sure of lots of singing, mingling and entertainment. 

    Gullivers Big Events - Gullivers Festival

    After a leisurely morning join us at the Gullivers Festival where we will all come together in one big celebration of Rugby and celebrate the food and wine of South Africa. We will be joined by some well-known faces from previous Lions tours & enjoy the build up to the 2nd Test Match of the Series.

    Match Day

    Today is Cape Town's turn to host a test match, the pivotal second game of the series. So much has happened in game 2 in past series, the anticipation of what can happen is what builds the excitement. We will transfer from the hotel the short distance to the stadium and back after the game.

  • Day10 - 13

    Cape Town

    Recover from the excitement of the test match with some down time in Cape Town. There are so many areas of Cape Town to explore whether you are looking to enjoy South African cuisine or history, there is a place for you. Why not enjoy one of the organised optional excursions on offer (pre-booking essential) or explore in your own time. For the active amongst you a hike up Lions Head is rewarded with stunning views (a guided trip is recommended for safety) and many an hour can be spent in one of the waterfront bars enjoying the climate and the view. Of all the destinations we’ve visited in the world Cape Town has to be up there with the sheer variety and quality of restaurants, with a wide range of cuisines on offer, set against beautiful background views, making those famous South African wines taste even better!

    Melrose Arch (Johannesburg)

    Today we leave Cape Town and return to Johannesburg and Melrose ahead of the eagerly anticipated third test match of the series. We will make the short transfer to Cape Town airport for the flight to Johannesburg where, upon landing, we will transfer to the Marriott hotel again. 

    Whilst in Johannesburg why not take some time to learn about the history, it is hard to believe Johannesburg didn't exist 130 years ago! For most, Soweto is synonymous with Johannesburg and with resistance to apartheid, South Africa’s former policy of racial segregation. The township’s complex past is visible in Soweto’s moving museums, historical monuments, and strong traditions, and is well worth a visit on an organised tour. Constitution Hill is another of South Africa's most important historical sites which gives insight into South Africa’s recent history.

    Melrose Arch (Johannesburg)

    Today sees the third of the Gullivers Big Event days with a rugby day. An invitational Gullivers side will take on some local sides in a day of rugby. You can be assured of great camaraderie, true rugby atmosphere, singing, raffles, mixing with the locals and rugby stories.

    Bring your boots for a game or come along and support the Gullivers Barbarians at our rugby club visit in Johannesburg; a great opportunity to mix with the locals. Always a popular day out with our supporters, food will be provided after the games and we anticipate there will be plenty of opportunity for you to swap stories and out sing the Springboks supporters in their own backyard, in preparation for the final test match tomorrow.

    Today marks the third and final test match of the series for the British & Irish Lions. The third test was a memorable affair in NZ in 2017, what will this game have in store? We will transfer you to the stadium from the hotel and back again after the final whistle.

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

TASTE OF GAUTENG FULL DAY TOUR

You will be collected from your hotel before breakfast and transferred approximately 30 minutes to our first stop, taking in the Union Buildings in Pretoria and perhaps posing for a photo with the statue of Nelson Mandela. After a brief visit you will continue your journey through the outskirts of Johannesburg to the historical township of Soweto via Pretoria City.

The tour will stop at Vilakazi Street where you can sample some local cuisine. From there you will depart for a short visit to Standard Bank Ferreira Mine Stope before travelling to Maboneng via the Mining District – another photo opportunity!

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After an hour of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

CAPE POINT FULL DAY TOUR

This full day tour is an ideal way to see the highlights of the Cape Peninsula. After being picked up from your hotel you will travel along the Atlantic seaboard coastal road with the pristine white beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay with their soft white sand and azure blue water.  The formidable 12 Apostles Peaks rise above the road on one side, while sheer cliffs and incredible rock formations drop into the icy Atlantic Ocean on the other side. There is no doubt the coast of the Cape peninsula offers magnificent scenery with its great biodiversity

You will arrive at the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay where you will take a half hour boat trip to Duiker Island to see a Cape Fur Seal colony. If open (weather permitting), the tour will continue via Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most stunning roadways in the world.

Your tour continues to the Cape Point Nature Reserve and the tip of the Cape Peninsula that has captivated travellers for centuries, where you have the opportuniry to go up the funicular at the point.  The return journey to Cape Town takes you along the False Bay coast, visiting the colony of rare African Penguins at Boulders Beach and passing through the naval village of Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. Your last visit will be made to the internationally acclaimed Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden before returning to the hotel.

On this tour you will experience highlights of Cape Town, starting with a visit to the summit of Table Mountain, South Africa’s most famous and prominent landmark, and one of New 7 Wonders of Nature, on an aerial cableway*.  The tour then continues on to visit the oldest colonial building in South Africa, The Castle of Good Hope, bastion fort built in the 17th century, where you will be able to view art and photography exhibitions that depict the historic start of the city.

The tour moves on to Company Gardens, before transferring to Bo-Kaap, a former township known for its colourful and bright painted buildings.

The final stop of this half day tour is a visit to Dimond Works to discover the history of the diamond and gold trade in South Africa and witness the art of diamond cutting and the careful craftsmanship of jewellery manufacturing.

WINELANDS FULL DAY TOUR 3 AUGUST

The world-renowned Cape Winelands are situated about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Departing the hotel in the morning your first stop on the tour is the town of Paarl, especially well-known for its Pearl Mountain or "Paarl Rock". In Paarl you will visit one of the top Paarl wine estates to sample their fine wines and enjoy a tour of their cellar, gaining insight into the process of viniculture.

The tour moves on to Franschhoek, a charming old Huguenot village, also known as ‘the French corner’ and a wine-lover's dream destination. Here you will stop to enjoy lunch and another wine tasting at an excellent wine estate.

The last stop of the day, but certainly not the least, is Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and the historic heart of the country’s wine region. Embark on a walking tour through Stellenbosch where much of the original Cape-Dutch architecture has been preserved, before rounding off with a final wine tasting at one of the top wine estates in the area. Finally, you will be transferred back to Cape Town.

The day starts with a one-hour coach transfer to Franschhoek, where you will board the wine tram. Journey by tram to a local wine estate where a knowledgeable wine guide weaves the facts, figures and scientific aspects of winemaking into interesting stories about Franschhoek’s history of wine and culture.

During this engaging and interactive experience, you will be guided through, and have an opportunity to sample, the subtle tastes of terroir, as well as learn about the local grape varieties, cultivars and the aspects of viticulture which are unique to Southern Africa.

A tour of the estate wine cellar will be followed by a specially curated three course lunch at the estate restaurant. In the afternoon, you will visit two additional Franschhoek wine estates, enjoying a premium wine tasting at each estate.
