    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg! Your base for your stay in Johannesburg is the cosmopolitan Hyde Park, one of the most exclusive districts of Johannesburg. Hyde Park Shopping Centre, an integral part of the district, is home to shops and boutiques, whilst more importantly there is a selection of cafes and restaurants, central to the way of life of this area, and perfect for relaxing before and after the excitement of the rugby.

    After clearing customs and immigration you will be transferred to your hotel.

    This evening get together with your Tour Manager for Welcome Drinks. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa.

    Hyde Park (Johannesburg)

    Day at leisure in Hyde Park. Get to know your local area, or Nelson Mandela Square with its many cafe's, bars and restaurants is just a short taxi ride away and a very popular spot for visitors to the area. Alternatively you could book onto the advertised excursion that Gullivers is running today (pre booking essential).

    This evening join us for one of our Big Events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

  • Day4

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we will transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick off and after the match finishes we will transfer back to the hotel.

  • Day5 - 8

    Knysna (Garden Route)

    Today we leave Johannesburg and head down to the Garden Route. We will transfer to Johannesburg airport for the flight to George and from George, we will transfer to the hotel in Knysna for a 4 night stay. With its waterfront location on Knysna lagoon this is a great spot to relax and unwind for a few days before heading back up to Cape Town. Knysna is at the heart of the famous Garden Route, surrounded by Nature reserves and National Parks. Whilst here it's worth considering booking onto a guided tour of the area or perhaps hiring a car and exploring the local towns. Plettenberg Bay just a short drive away is a lovely small beach town and a little further along is Tsitsikamma National Park. There are plenty of opportunities to be active in the region whether it be a beach/lagoon walk, a nature hike or canoeing! Back in Knysna why not wander over the bridge to Thesen Island and spend your evening at Tapas & Oysters where you can be sure of a great evening with the locals enjoying live music and hearty grub, it can get lively! Sirocco next door has been enjoyed by the Gullivers Staff for a quieter evening meal - if you can get a table overlooking the lagoon you will catch a lovely sunset.

    Cape Town

    Today we leave Knysna and head to the airport in George for the flight back up to Cape Town. Upon landing in Cape Town, we will make the short transfer to the Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence hotel for a 7 night stay. The Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence enjoys a location in the Cape Town from which you can easily jump in a taxi and explore all the best areas, whether that be Long Street and Kloof Street and the selection of bars and restaurants on offer there or the shops, markets and eateries at the V&A Waterfront. Cape Town is one of the most magical cities in the world with it's fantastic waterfront location and Table Mountain backdrop. With 7 nights here you have the opportunity to explore a little further afield and head over to stunning Camps Bay, the perfect spot for sundowners at one of the many bars/restaurants with ocean front views. If you are looking to enjoy live sport look no further than Mojo Market in Sea Point, a short taxi ride from your hotel. Here you will find a variety of local food vendors all under one roof with live music and plenty of big screens showing live sport.

    Cape Town

    Today is a day of celebration as all of the Gullivers Tour groups get together to enjoy an afternoon of socialising, drinks and the true spirit of rugby touring. For those that were with us in Auckland 2017 this was a tour highlight and you can be sure of lots of singing, mingling and entertainment. 

    Gullivers Big Events - Gullivers Festival

    After a leisurely morning join us at the Gullivers Festival where we will all come together in one big celebration of Rugby and celebrate the food and wine of South Africa. We will be joined by some well-known faces from previous Lions tours & enjoy the build up to the 2nd Test Match of the Series.

    Match Day

    Today is Cape Town's turn to host a test match, the pivotal second game of the series. So much has happened in game 2 in past series, the anticipation of what can happen is what builds the excitement. We will transfer from the hotel the short distance to the stadium and back after the game.

    Cape Town

    Recover from the excitement of the test match with some down time in Cape Town. There are so many areas of Cape Town to explore whether you are looking to enjoy South African cuisine or history, there is a place for you. Why not enjoy one of the organised optional excursions on offer (pre-booking essential) or explore in your own time. For the active amongst you a hike up Lions Head is rewarded with stunning views (a guided trip is recommended for safety) and many an hour can be spent in one of the waterfront bars enjoying the climate and the view. Of all the destinations we’ve visited in the world Cape Town has to be up there with the sheer variety and quality of restaurants, with a wide range of cuisines on offer, set against beautiful background views, making those famous South African wines taste even better!

    Hyde Park (Johannesburg)

    Today we leave Cape Town and return to Johannesburg and Hyde Park ahead of the eagerly anticipated third test match of the series. We'll make the short transfer to Cape Town airport for the flight to Johannesburg where, upon landing, we will transfer to the Southern Sun Hyde Park hotel again. 

    Whilst in Johannesburg why not take some time to learn about the history, it’s hard to believe Johannesburg didn't exist 130 years ago. For most, Soweto is synonymous with Johannesburg and with resistance to apartheid, South Africa’s former policy of racial segregation. The township’s complex past is visible in Soweto’s moving museums, historical monuments, and strong traditions, and is well worth a visit on an organised tour. Constitution Hill is another of South Africa's most important historical sites which gives insight into South Africa’s recent history.

    Hyde Park (Johannesburg)

    Today sees the third of the Gullivers Big Event days with a rugby day. An invitational Gullivers side will take on some local sides in a day of rugby. You can be assured of great camaraderie, true rugby atmosphere, singing, raffles, mixing with the locals and rugby stories.

    Bring your boots for a game or come along and support the Gullivers Barbarians at our rugby club visit in Johannesburg; a great opportunity to mix with the locals. Always a popular day out with our supporters, food will be provided after the games and we anticipate there will be plenty of opportunity for you to swap stories and out sing the Springboks supporters in their own backyard, in preparation for the final test match tomorrow.

    Match Day

    Today marks the third and final test match of the series for the British & Irish Lions. The third test was a memorable affair in NZ in 2017, what will this game have in store? We will transfer you to the stadium from the hotel and back again after the final whistle.

ROBBERG NATURE RESERVE

ROBBERG NATURE RESERVE GUIDED HIKE HALF DAY TOUR 26 JULY

Depart your hotel after an early breakfast for the 30-minute journey to Robberg Nature Reserve, on arrival you will meet your experienced hiking guide. Your guide will take you along one of the Western Cape’s most famous hiking routes, as well as one of the most scenic, with breath-taking views.

Robberg is not only a nature reserve, but also a national monument and World Heritage Site. Rocks from this region date back 120 million years to the break-up of Gondwanaland and evidence of middle and later Stone Age inhabitation has been found in a few of the caves along the peninsula.

You can expect inspiring landscapes, and if you are lucky spot dolphins and whales whilst being accompanied on your hike by a variety of bird species and the occasional seal.

Please note the route is safe for any hiker with a moderate level of fitness and good balance and consists of gravel, pebbles, sand, and wooden board walks. There are steep parts, and some parts of the path are on the edges of rocky cliffs.

JOHANNESBURG CITY HALF DAY TOUR 23 JULY

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

The pristine paradise of Featherbed Private Nature Reserve is only accessible by ferry across the crystal-clear waters of the Knysna lagoon. This spectacular eco-experience includes the return ferry trip, an optional 2.2km walk and a nature drive stopping at viewpoints that will take your breath away. This trip is then all finished with a renowned buffet lunch at an outdoor restaurant under a canopy of Milkwood trees.

Specialist guides will escort your journey through this protected, thriving heaven as you try to catch a glimpse of the rare Black African Oyster Catchers (listed in the endangered red data list) as well as Cape Mountain Tortoises, the Blue Crane (National Bird) and also some of Africa’s smallest antelope species as well as more! These guides will also provide an intriguing insight into the reserve’s floras and fauna and you will learn about how the reserve is flourishing after a fire in 2017.

The optional walk is something not to miss out on as it takes you through coastal forests and fynbos, past steep sandstone cliffs and into the ancient Khoi Khoi Sea Caves which will only enhance your opportunity of spotting the more elusive of the island’s inhabitants.

This excursion is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, however the optional walk is down a path that at times is uneven and rocky, and a reasonable balance and a moderate level of fitness is required.

Depart your hotel after an early breakfast for the 1 ½ hour journey to Oudtshoorn, the "ostrich capital of the world".

The first stop of the day is at the Cango Caves, a 20-million-year-old network of limestone chambers,

are made up of a diverse array of underground formations ranging from massive caverns to narrow passageways barely wide enough to squeeze through.  Cave paintings and artifacts indicate that the caves were in use throughout prehistory over a long period during the Middle and Later Stone Ages.

Spacious, well-lit corridors reveal floor to ceiling stalagmites and stalactites. You will be guided on the Heritage Tour which is an easy walk with some stairways through the first six largest and most spectacular halls and continuing through to the "African Drum room".

The tour will move on to a local Ostrich Farm where you will learn all about the world’s largest bird, including the history, farming practices and ostrich industry. Departing your hotel for the 1 hour transfer to Stormsriver this tour will give you the opportunity to experience the unique biome of the indigenous Tsitsikamma forest on a journey down the old Stormsriver Pass from the comfort of a specially-designed vehicle. The vehicle will follow the elephant migratory route, passing yellowwoods and stinkwoods, while you learn about the history of the area and its indigenous fauna and flora. You will be guided through the local culture, fauna and flora such as the Knob Wood tree originally used for tooth ache by the Khoisan, identifying plants such as the “Bushman’s bedding” which was used as a natural insect repellent.

The optional walk is something not to miss out on as it takes you through coastal forests and fynbos, past steep sandstone cliffs and into the ancient Khoi Khoi Sea Caves which will only enhance your opportunity of spotting the more elusive of the island’s inhabitants.

Aquila’s story began in 1999 when its owner, Searl Derman, set about searching for the perfect piece of land to re-introduce the Big 5 to the Western Cape. He was fortunate enough to come across a nature reserve that would later become Aquila Private Game Reserve.

The 10,000 hectare conservancy has evolved from its early days of being residence to various antelope species only to becoming the home of the Big 5 – elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard - as well as a significant amount of other wild game, which roam freely on the reserve.

The tour departs your hotel after breakfast, with an approximate 2 ½ hour drive to Aquila. On arrival enjoy a relaxing lunch at the Aquila Karoo Visitor Centre. You will then embark on an afternoon safari drive that is led by an experienced guide who will share exciting stories and facts about the surroundings, whilst experiencing the beauty of the Karoo and trying to spot as many of the Big 5 as possible! This full day tour is an ideal way to see the highlights of the Cape Peninsula. After being picked up from your hotel you will travel along the Atlantic seaboard coastal road with the pristine white beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay with their soft white sand and azure blue water.  The formidable 12 Apostles Peaks rise above the road on one side, while sheer cliffs and incredible rock formations drop into the icy Atlantic Ocean on the other side. There is no doubt the coast of the Cape peninsula offers magnificent scenery with its great biodiversity

You will arrive at the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay where you will take a half hour boat trip to Duiker Island to see a Cape Fur Seal colony. If open (weather permitting), the tour will continue via Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most stunning roadways in the world.

Your tour continues to the Cape Point Nature Reserve and the tip of the Cape Peninsula that has captivated travellers for centuries, where you have the opportuniry to go up the funicular at the point.  The return journey to Cape Town takes you along the False Bay coast, visiting the colony of rare African Penguins at Boulders Beach and passing through the naval village of Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. On this tour you will experience highlights of Cape Town, starting with a visit to the summit of Table Mountain, South Africa’s most famous and prominent landmark, and one of New 7 Wonders of Nature, on an aerial cableway*.  The tour then continues on to visit the oldest colonial building in South Africa, The Castle of Good Hope, bastion fort built in the 17th century, where you will be able to view art and photography exhibitions that depict the historic start of the city.

The tour moves on to Company Gardens, before transferring to Bo-Kaap, a former township known for its colourful and bright painted buildings.

The final stop of this half day tour is a visit to Dimond Works to discover the history of the diamond and gold trade in South Africa and witness the art of diamond cutting and the careful craftsmanship of jewellery manufacturing.

The world-renowned Cape Winelands are situated about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Departing the hotel in the morning your first stop on the tour is the town of Paarl, especially well-known for its Pearl Mountain or "Paarl Rock". In Paarl you will visit one of the top Paarl wine estates to sample their fine wines and enjoy a tour of their cellar, gaining insight into the process of viniculture.

The tour moves on to Franschhoek, a charming old Huguenot village, also known as ‘the French corner’ and a wine-lover's dream destination. Here you will stop to enjoy lunch and another wine tasting at an excellent wine estate.

The last stop of the day, but certainly not the least, is Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and the historic heart of the country’s wine region. Embark on a walking tour through Stellenbosch where much of the original Cape-Dutch architecture has been preserved, before rounding off with a final wine tasting at one of the top wine estates in the area.
