    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg! Your base for your stay in Johannesburg is the exclusive district of Melrose, within the Melrose Arch precinct. Melrose Arch is known for its exclusive and vibrant atmosphere with high end fashion stores, café culture and fine dining. Upon arrival in South Africa, make your own way to your hotel in Johannesburg and check in for your 3 night stay

    This evening the group will get together with Gullivers Staff for Welcome Drinks. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa.

    Melrose Arch (Johannesburg)

    Day at leisure in Melrose Arch. With plenty of facilities onsite including a pool and bar you are welcome to relax and recover after the flight at the hotel or get to know the Melrose Arch area. For those looking to explore a little the vibrant Nelson Mandela Square with its many cafe's, bars and restaurants is just a short taxi ride away. This evening join us for one of our Big Events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

    You are invited to join some famous faces from the world of Rugby and previous Lions tours for an evening of lively discussion & insight into the current tour.

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg, there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we'll transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick-off and after the match finishes, we will transfer back to the hotel.

Depart your hotel early morning for a 90-minute transfer to the Dinokeng Big 5 Safari, a large wildlife sanctuary that covers an area of approximately 21,000 hectares. Situated within the boundaries of a large metropolis, the Dinokeng Game Reserve has the potential to become a model for future conservation where people and wild animals live in harmony.

On arrival you will embark on a private game drive in small groups with qualified rangers and trackers in open safari vehicles. You will be taken to the best areas for spotting lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, cheetahs, and hippos! In addition to these species, look out for giraffes, elands, kudus, impalas, zebras, wildebeests (Gnu), red hartebeests, warthogs, black-backed jackals, crocodiles, ostriches, hyenas, and if you are very lucky the occasional leopard.

4WD Safari vehicles are a great way to be able to traverse over 8,500 hectares of indigenous bush vegetation increasing the chances of good animal sightings.

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.
