    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg! Your base for your stay in Johannesburg is the exclusive district of Melrose. Melrose Arch precinct is known for its exclusive and vibrant atmosphere with high end fashion stores, café culture and fine dining. Upon arrival in South Africa, make your own way to your hotel in Johannesburg and check in for your 3 night stay

    This evening the group will get together with Gullivers Staff for Welcome Drinks. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa.

    Melrose Arch (Johannesburg)

    Day at leisure in Melrose Arch. With plenty of facilities onsite including a pool and bar you are welcome to relax and recover after the flight at the hotel or get to know the Melrose Arch precinct. For those looking to explore a little the vibrant Nelson Mandela Square with its many cafe's, bars and restaurants is just a short taxi ride away, or why not book onto the optional excursion we are running today? This evening join us for one of our Big Events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

  • Day3

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg, there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we'll transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick-off and after the match finishes, we will transfer back to the hotel.

  • Day4 - 6

    Safari (Pilanesberg National Park)

    Today we leave Melrose Arch and drive approximately 3 hours into the Pilanesberg region for 3 nights on Safari. A bucket list for many, the opportunity to enjoy a safari in South Africa is sure to be a trip highlight. Staying for 3 nights at the 5 Star Ivory Tree Game lodge in the malaria free Pilanesberg Game Reserve you will have the opportunity to enjoy safari drives with your guide in the Big 5 territory. There are two daily game drives included during your stay as well as all meals, teas, coffees, and snacks. Outside of the Game Drives enjoy the facilities at the lodge and relax as hard as you like whether that be with lazy afternoon naps or enjoying the optional activities that you can book on site (additional costs)


    The lodge itself will have their own guidance on tipping their staff including the professional guides but it's widely acknowledged that if you think the service has been good it is advised you should tip directly at the resort as the staff rely on gratuities. Gratuities are not included in the price and are left to the discretion of the individuals.

  • Day7

    Cape Town

    This morning we depart the Safari Lodge and head back to Johannesburg and to the airport for your flight across to Cape Town. Upon landing in Cape Town we will make the short transfer to the hotel for a 4 night stay. The Southern Sun Cullinan hotel is in a fantastic location walking distance from the waterfront. Cape Town is one of the most magical cities in the world with its fantastic waterfront location and Table Mountain backdrop. With 4 nights here you have the opportunity to explore a little further afield and head over to stunning Camps Bay, the perfect spot for sundowners at one of the many bars/restaurants with ocean front views. If you are looking to enjoy live sport look no further than Mojo Market in Sea Point, a short taxi ride from your hotel. Here you will find a variety of local food vendors all under one roof with live music and plenty of big screens showing live sport.

    Cape Town

    There are so many areas of Cape Town to explore whether you are looking to enjoy South African cuisine or history, there is a place for you. Why not enjoy one of the organised optional excursions on offer (pre-booking essential) or explore in your own time. For the active amongst you a hike up Lions Head is rewarded with stunning views (a guided trip is recommended for safety) and many an hour can be spent in one of the waterfront bars enjoying the climate and the view. Of all the destinations we’ve visited in the world Cape Town has to be up there with the sheer variety and quality of restaurants, with a wide range of cuisines on offer, set against beautiful background views, making those famous South African wines taste even better!

  • Day9

    Cape Town

    Today is a day of celebration as all of the Gullivers Tour groups get together to enjoy an afternoon of socialising, drinks and the true spirit of rugby touring. For those that were with us in Auckland in 2017 this was a tour highlight and you can be sure of lots of singing, mingling and entertainment. 

    Gullivers Big Events - Gullivers Festival

    After a leisurely morning join us at the Gullivers Festival where we will all come together in one big celebration of Rugby and celebrate the food and wine of South Africa. We will be joined by some well-known faces from previous Lions tours & enjoy the build up to the 2nd Test Match of the Series.

    Match Day

    Today is Cape Town's turn to host a test match, the pivotal second game of the series. So much has happened in game 2 in past series, the anticipation of what can happen is what builds the excitement. We will transfer from the hotel the short distance to the stadium and back after the game.

The reserve is set within the crater of an ancient volcano – one of the largest of a very rare formation, where the Big 5 now roam, a mere 2 hour drive from Johannesburg. Surrounded by plains and hills, this luxurious lodge boasts an outdoor pool and spa. The thatched rooms are elegantly furnished with African themes. This hotel is inclusive of breakfast and dinner - as well as two game drives per day and lunch.

Southern Sun The Cullinan, Cape Town

Located just a short walk away from the renowned V&A Waterfront, this beautifully designed hotel holds classic architecture with high ceilings, a balconied mezzanine level and soaring columns around the pool area. The hotel has a large outdoor heated pool with deck, a fitness centre, a restaurant and bar. Of an evening, why not take a 5-minute leisurely stroll to the vibrant V&A Waterfront Harbour, where the city meets the sea, with a plethora of shops, restaurants and bars.

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

The world-renowned Cape Winelands are situated about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Departing the hotel in the morning your first stop on the tour is the town of Paarl, especially well-known for its Pearl Mountain or "Paarl Rock". In Paarl you will visit one of the top Paarl wine estates to sample their fine wines and enjoy a tour of their cellar, gaining insight into the process of viniculture.

The tour moves on to Franschhoek, a charming old Huguenot village, also known as ‘the French corner’ and a wine-lover's dream destination. Here you will stop to enjoy lunch and another wine tasting at an excellent wine estate.

The last stop of the day, but certainly not the least, is Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and the historic heart of the country’s wine region. Embark on a walking tour through Stellenbosch where much of the original Cape-Dutch architecture has been preserved, before rounding off with a final wine tasting at one of the top wine estates in the area. Finally, you will be transferred back to Cape Town.

The day starts with a one-hour coach transfer to Franschhoek, where you will board the wine tram. Journey by tram to a local wine estate where a knowledgeable wine guide weaves the facts, figures and scientific aspects of winemaking into interesting stories about Franschhoek’s history of wine and culture.

During this engaging and interactive experience, you will be guided through, and have an opportunity to sample, the subtle tastes of terroir, as well as learn about the local grape varieties, cultivars and the aspects of viticulture which are unique to Southern Africa.

A tour of the estate wine cellar will be followed by a specially curated three course lunch at the estate restaurant. In the afternoon, you will visit two additional Franschhoek wine estates, enjoying a premium wine tasting at each estate.
