    Arrive South Africa

    Welcome to Johannesburg! Make your own way to the base for your stay in Johannesburg is Rosebank, a popular and vibrant district. At the centre is a fashionable shopping precinct presided over by the welcoming Rosebank Mall. Rosebank is known for its fun weekend markets, African crafts, great high-street shopping, buzzing restaurants and cafes, and an excellent range of art galleries, all within an easily walkable area. You can expect to see lots of Lions fans staying in the multiple hotels in Rosebank. 

    Get together with your Tour Manager for Welcome Drinks this evening. Share a drink, reminisce on past Lions tours and share the excitement of the upcoming Game, Series and your stay in South Africa. Following this, this evening join us for one of our Big Events as we welcome ex-players, journalists and those in the know for a hosted Q and A ahead of the test series.

    Match Day

    Today is the day we have been building up to, the first test match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions. A special day that will forever live in the hearts of every Lions fan as the tourists prepare to face the wrath of the World Champions on their own soil.

    With 2 of the 3 Test Matches being played in Johannesburg there are sure to be thousands of Lions fans staying in the various districts all coming together in one big celebration of Rugby.

    After the excitement of the last test match against NZ in 2017, hopes are high going into the game against the World Champions. After swapping stories in the bar with your fellow Lions fans we will transfer to the stadium in plenty of time ahead of kick off and after the match finishes we will transfer back to the hotel.

    Port Elizabeth

    Check out of the Holiday Inn Rosebank this morning and transfer to Johannesburg airport for the short flight to Port Elizabeth. Upon arrival in Port Elizabeth, transfer with the group to the Protea Port Elizabeth hotel to check in for your 1 night stay before heading onto the famous Garden Route. 

    Affectionally known by locals by the friendly or windy city, Port Elizabeth sits on the Indian Ocean's Algoa Bay, famed as the Bottlenose Dolphin capital of the world but also homing an extensive array of wildlife including seals and penguins. Algoa Bay also forms an important part of the migration route for Southern Right & Humpback Whales between the months of August - December. The city also features some of the countries most impressive blue flag beaches to enjoy.

    Garden Route (Knysna)

    On Tuesday we leave Port Elizabeth and head for Kynsna along the fantastic Garden Route for your stay at the Protea Knysna Quays. This 3 hour coastal transfer will leave you in awe as we drive through some of the most spectacular scenery the country has to offer.  On arrival check into Protea Knysna Quays hotel and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure

    Garden Route (Knysna)

    Knysna is at the heart of the famous Garden Route, surrounded by Nature Reserves and National Parks. Whilst here it's worth considering booking onto a guided tour of the area or perhaps hiring a car and exploring the local towns. Plettenberg Bay just a short drive away is a lovely small beach town and a little further along is Tsitsikamma National Park. There are plenty of opportunities to be active in the region whether it be a beach/lagoon walk, a nature hike or canoeing! Back in Knysna why not wander over the bridge to Thesen Island and spend your evening at Tapas & Oysters where you can be sure of a great evening with the locals enjoying live music and hearty grub, it can get lively! Sirocco next door has been enjoyed by the Gullivers Staff for a quieter evening meal - if you can get a table overlooking the lagoon you will catch a lovely sunset.

    Durbanville (for Cape Town Test)

    This morning we depart the hotel and make the short transfer to George airport for the flight to Cape Town. Upon arrival into Cape Town, we will make the transfer to the hotel for a 3 night stay. The Protea Hotel Durbanville is located outside of Cape Town City centre on the Durbanville Wine Route and is set amongst the lush vineyards of the D'Aria Wine Estate.

    Durbanville (for Cape Town Test)

    Today is a day of celebration as all of the Gullivers Tour groups get together to enjoy an afternoon of socialising, drinks and the true spirit of rugby touring. For those that were with us in Auckland 2017 this was a tour highlight and you can be sure of lots of singing, mingling and entertainment.

    After a leisurely morning join us at the Gullivers Festival where we will all come together in one big celebration of Rugby and celebrate the food and wine of South Africa. We will be joined by some well-known faces from previous Lions tours & enjoy the build up to the 2nd Test Match of the Series.

    Match Day

    Today is Cape Town's turn to host a test match, the pivotal second game of the series. So much has happened in game 2 in past series, the anticipation of what can happen is what builds the excitement. We will transfer from the hotel the short distance to the stadium and back after the game.

    Victoria Falls (Livingstone, Zambia)

    Today we leave Cape Town and South Africa for Victoria Falls, Zambia. We’ll make the short drive to the airport for the flight into Zambia and from there after clearing customs and immigration we’ll drive to our hotel, Avani Victoria Falls, for a 4 night stay. The hotel enjoys an unrivalled and unique location from which to enjoy the Falls.

    Victoria Falls (Livingstone, Zambia)

    Described by the tribe living in the area in the 1800s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, with more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, and at over a width of nearly two kilometres, it truly is deserving of its place as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world. Victoria falls is the world’s largest sheet of falling water and almost double the height of Niagara Falls. Enjoy your stay relaxing at the hotel, where giraffe and zebra can often be found wandering the grounds, experiencing the falls at different times of the day, enjoying a safari drive or a sunset cruise on the Zambezi (pre-booking advised). The relaxed and friendly Zambian town of Livingston is also just a short drive away.

    Rosebank (Johannesburg)

    Today with depart Victoria falls for our flight to Johannesburg and Rosebank ahead of the eagerly anticipated third test match of the series. On arrival into Rosebank we will check back into the Holiday Inn Rosebank Hotel.

    Whilst in Johannesburg why not take some time to learn about the history, it’s hard to believe Johannesburg didn't exist 130 years ago. For most, Soweto is synonymous with Johannesburg and with resistance to apartheid, South Africa’s former policy of racial segregation. The township’s complex past is visible in Soweto’s moving museums, historical monuments, and strong traditions, and is well worth a visit on an organised tour. Constitution Hill is another of South Africa's most important historical sites which gives insight into South Africa’s recent history.

    Rosebank (Johannesburg)

    Today sees the third of the Gullivers Big Event days with a rugby day. An invitational Gullivers side will take on some local sides in a day of rugby. You can be assured of great camaraderie, true rugby atmosphere, singing, raffles, mixing with the locals and rugby stories.

    Bring your boots for a game or come along and support the Gullivers Barbarians at our rugby club visit in Johannesburg; a great opportunity to mix with the locals. Always a popular day out with our supporters, food will be provided after the games and we anticipate there will be plenty of opportunity for you to swap stories and out sing the Springboks supporters in their own backyard, in preparation for the final test match tomorrow.

    Today marks the third and final test match of the series for the British & Irish Lions. The third test was a memorable affair in NZ in 2017, what will this game have in store? We will transfer you to the stadium from the hotel and back again after the final whistle.

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. On this tour discover the fascinating history and rich culture that makes this beautiful city what it is today.

Departing after breakfast, the tour will start with a drive through the Newtown Precinct, formally known in the 20th Century as "the Brickfields" – an area that was rich in clay. This is followed by a visit to the “top of Africa”, where will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg. You will then proceed on to Maboneng precinct where you will have some free time to explore its many shops and eateries as well as spot some public artwork created by some of the biggest names wielding spraycans.

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. After 2 hours of learning about South Africa’s journey to democracy, you will return to your hotel.

You will be collected from your hotel before breakfast and transferred approximately 30 minutes to our first stop, taking in the Union Buildings in Pretoria and perhaps posing for a photo with the statue of Nelson Mandela. After a brief visit you will continue your journey through the outskirts of Johannesburg to the historical township of Soweto via Pretoria City.

The tour will stop at Vilakazi Street where you can sample some local cuisine. From there you will depart for a short visit to Standard Bank Ferreira Mine Stope before travelling to Maboneng via the Mining District – another photo opportunity!

The final part of this excursions sees a visit to Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. The pristine paradise of Featherbed Private Nature Reserve is only accessible by ferry across the crystal-clear waters of the Knysna lagoon. This spectacular eco-experience includes the return ferry trip, an optional 2.2km walk and a nature drive stopping at viewpoints that will take your breath away. This trip is then all finished with a renowned buffet lunch at an outdoor restaurant under a canopy of Milkwood trees.

Specialist guides will escort your journey through this protected, thriving heaven as you try to catch a glimpse of the rare Black African Oyster Catchers (listed in the endangered red data list) as well as Cape Mountain Tortoises, the Blue Crane (National Bird) and also some of Africa’s smallest antelope species as well as more! These guides will also provide an intriguing insight into the reserve’s floras and fauna and you will learn about how the reserve is flourishing after a fire in 2017.

The optional walk is something not to miss out on as it takes you through coastal forests and fynbos, past steep sandstone cliffs and into the ancient Khoi Khoi Sea Caves which will only enhance your opportunity of spotting the more elusive of the island’s inhabitants.

Zambezi River Scenic Boat Safari Lunch

Experience Victoria Falls by boat on this Scenic Lunch Safari. Leaving the hotel before lunch you will visit remote parts of the Zambezi River which were previously inaccessible but you can now access  on the specially designed propeller-free safari boats you will be boarding. You will get to enjoy the thrill of speeding over rapids then slowing down for a leisurely river wildlife and bird viewing trip around the islands.

The boats head upstream in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, exploring the many Zambezi islands and channels. Hippos and crocodile can be spotted throughout the year and in the winter months there is the exciting possibility of watching elephants in the river crossing to the islands.

Stretch your legs and enjoy a refreshment stop on one of the Zambezi River islands and enjoy a light lunch as the river passes by the island.

Experience Victoria Falls by boat on this Scenic Sunset Safari. Leaving the hotel in the afternoon you will visit remote parts of the Zambezi River which were previously inaccessible but you can now access on the specially designed propeller-free safari boats you will be boarding. You will get to enjoy the thrill of speeding over rapids then slowing down for a leisurely river wildlife and bird viewing trip around the islands.

The boats head upstream in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, exploring the many Zambezi islands and channels. Hippos and crocodile can be spotted throughout the year and in the winter months there is the exciting possibility of watching elephants in the river crossing to the islands.

Stretch your legs and enjoy a refreshment stop on one of the Zambezi River islands and enjoy sundowner drinks as the sun sinks over the Zambezi river.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK FULL DAY SAFARI AND TOUR 4 August

Chobe National Park is a true wildlife paradise and one of the best national parks in Southern Africa. It is said to be extremely lush because of the many waterways. The Chobe River flows through the park and draws many animals and birds during the dry season.

You will transfer before breakfast across the Botswana border via short ferry, completing immigration and customs formalities before continuing to the Chobe National Park. Cruise on the Chobe River with a chance of spotting elephant and other game species coming to drink and bathe in the river, as well as many bird species. Lunch is then served at a lodge (drinks not included). The afternoon continues with a game drive in open vehicles into the Chobe National Park, with a chance of spotting lion and buffalo as well as numerous plains game species. You will then transfer back across the Zambian border late afternoon.

Please note Botswana visa fees are not included and will need to be arranged by yourself prior to the excursion. The easiest way to do this is to get a KAZA visa on arrival into Livingstone, this special visa is valid for travel between Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe (and will also enable you to visit Zimbabwe during your stay).  As of September 2020, it costs US$50 per person and is valid for 30 days.
