Whilst in Johannesburg why not take some time to learn about the history, it’s hard to believe Johannesburg didn't exist 130 years ago. For most, Soweto is synonymous with Johannesburg and with resistance to apartheid, South Africa’s former policy of racial segregation. The township’s complex past is visible in Soweto’s moving museums, historical monuments, and strong traditions, and is well worth a visit on an organised tour. Departing your hotel before breakfast for the drive across KwaZulu-Natal, the first stop of the day after approximately 2 hours is at Fort Noquai, a beautiful old fort originally created in the middle of the Dlinza Forest in eShowe in 1883.

Now an eerie, isolated hill, marked by white boulders for the graves of the fallen British soldiers, on 22 January 1879 a British force stationed next to this hill found themselves opposed by some 20,000 Zulu warriors, well-versed in the art of war and under orders to show no mercy. Considered one of the British Army's worst military disasters what followed was a bloodbath.
