Gullivers Sports Travel Italian Grand Prix 2026 travel review

From the stylish streets of Milan to the high-speed drama of Monza, the 2026 Italian Grand Prix delivered everything Formula 1 fans could have hoped for. Our Tour Manager, Lynsay, was on the ground throughout the weekend, experiencing the city's famous landmarks, soaking up the atmosphere of the Tifosi and witnessing one of the most remarkable victories in recent Formula 1 history.

What was your favourite part of the city?

"I was based in Milan for the weekend, which was perfect for exploring the city alongside the Grand Prix. The Duomo as a definite highlight, with its sheer size and intricate detail. I also loved exploring Sforza Castle, a beautiful historic spot, offering a lovely, serene contrast to the busier streets of central Milan. In the evenings, Navigli was my favourite place, with its canals, restaurants, and lively atmosphere making it a great place to unwind."

What would you recommend doing in Como?

"A stroll through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a must, even if shopping isn’t your thing. This beautiful glass-roofed arcade, home to luxury shops, restaurants and historic cafes, was the real-life visual inspiration for the latest Wonka film. Milan is also easy to explore by public transport, so don’t be afraid to venture out and explore; some of the best hidden gems are the streets and little corners you come across while wandering."

How was the race?

"What a race to experience at Monza! Pierre Gasly remarkably started from pole for Alpine and made a clean getaway to hold the lead, but the drama began almost immediately. Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton went wheel-to-wheel into the opening chicane, forcing Hamilton wide into the gravel and dropping him down the order. Just a lap later, things went from bad to worse for Ferrari when Leclerc lost control through the final corner and slammed into the barriers. His race was over after just two laps, bringing out the Safety Car before the red flag. It was a huge disappointment for the Tifosi, although thankfully Leclerc walked away unharmed. After the safety car, Hamilton fought his way back into the action, battling for positions through the early laps, but ultimately couldn’t maintain the momentum and finished sixth.

Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli was putting together one of the drives of the season. A power-unit penalty had dropped him from seventh in qualifying to 19th on the grid, but the Italian charged through the field, reaching seventh before the red flag and continuing his incredible climb after the restart. He battled past the McLarens and into the lead fight, eventually chasing Mercedes teammate George Russell.

With just a handful of laps remaining, Antonelli made his decisive move on Russell after benefiting from a Virtual Safety Car pit stop for fresh tyres. He crossed the line to complete an extraordinary P19-to-P1 comeback, becoming the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since 1966. Russell finished second, with Max Verstappen third, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five. Even polesitter Gasly, who had led the opening laps, eventually slipped to seventh.

For a Monza weekend, it really had everything: an incredible home atmosphere, early Ferrari heartbreak, plenty of wheel-to-wheel action, incredible history and an unforgettable Italian victory for Antonelli. It was certainly a Grand Prix weekend to remember!"
