Who are you/ your role: Sally Jakeman – Tour Manager/ Event Lead
Your trip: Dubai 7s 29th Nov – 4th Dec 2023
What was your favourite part of Dubai? The Dubai Fountains at night – it was incredible watching the fountains at the bottom of the Burj Kalifa.
What was your favourite part of the trip? The Semi Final fixtures for both the women’s and men’s HSBC Sevens Dubai Cup were amazing. The games were so exiting, and both went down to the last few seconds of the games.
How was the event?
The Sevens Stadium comprises of 7 rugby pitches, 4 Netball courts, 3 cricket pitches, and an array of food and drink outlets. It has a festival vibe with lots going on all around the venue. GB women and men both kicked off the opening fixture of the Sevens Circuit on pitch 2 and unfortunately both didn’t start very well. Pitch 1 is where our reserved seating was, and the majority of the international games were played here. There are over 10 different tournaments taking place at the venue from Social leagues, Vets leagues, Invitational leagues, and UAE National leagues. The stand out teams which I was excited to watch were Fiji, New Zealand, Argentina, and Canada.
The Ice cream was also amazing, especially during the peak temperature times of the day where it hit over 30 degrees.
The tournament concluded with Australia Woman and South Africa Men taking the win in both very captivating games with a full crowd.
What would you recommend doing in Dubai?
Dubai is an amazing, eye-opening city. The Dubai Mall is a day out in itself with more shops in one place than I have ever seen in my life. The Dubai Ice Rink and Aquarium are also in this mall and worth a visit.
I went to Jumeirah beach and Wild Wiki Waterpark on my first day in Dubai and it did not disappoint. I worked my way up to the scarier rides throughout the day and was brave enough to do the big drop one at the end!!
The Palm Jumeirah is also an experience in itself and has lots of beach bars and hotels on it.
