Wales football team

Euro 2016 is now well on the way and teams are making their final preparations before the big kick-off on June 10th. As Official Supporters Travel Partner of the Football Association of Wales, we take a look at Wales' chances of success in the tournament.

With this tournament being the first to feature 24 teams, countries have a longer route than ever before to the final, which takes place on July 10th. The new structure means plenty of new teams, too, meaning there could be a strong chance of big surprises!

    Who are the favourites?

Holders Spain had a disastrous World Cup in Brazil, but they’ve returned to form since then and will be looking to ensure Germany do not continue their own era of dominance.

Betting against Joachim Loew’s men is hard to advise, though, with many of the young stars from 2014 now developing into even better players. The Germans will be turning to Thomas Muller and Mesut Ozil in particular to guide them to glory and continue their outstanding form.

As well as Spain and Germany, hosts France will be difficult to beat in their home country, with Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba coming off fantastic seasons for their clubs. Belgium will also be hoping to make a splash after a few years of developing their squad with de Bruyne, Lukaku and Hazard all establishing strong reputations in recent years.

    Could Wales do it?

Wales have shot up the FIFA world rankings in the last year, reaching an all-time high of 8th last October. While it’s difficult to rely on the table, the position created a lot of optimism across the country, especially alongside the heroics of Gareth Bale. Since then, they have fallen to 26th, but there is still a feeling that the team will perform well.

The blockbuster tie against England on June 16th will be the big challenge and it’s easy to believe the winner of that game will proceed to the knockout stages. Regardless of the outcome, it’s sure to be a match that will live long in the memory of the nation’s fans.

After some worries over Bale’s fitness this season, the Real Madrid star is set to be fit for the tournament and will be the focal point of Chris Coleman’s team.

Who could win the golden boot?

This year’s tournament is full of exceptional strikers ready to light up the international stage. Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski are just a few of the big names expecting to make a huge impact this year, along with Wales’ own Gareth Bale.

Whoever the golden boot winner is, it's likely their team will be successful. We’ve seen outstanding strikers like David Villa and Alan Shearer push their teams to the later stages before and the value of a true world-class striker cannot be underestimated.
