West Indies ODI Series 2017

England have completed a one-day clean sweep over the West Indies with a 186 run win in the final day.

Alex Hales and Joe Root both struck centuries as the visitors put in a magnificent performance on day three to show off England’s strong credentials as one of the world’s premier cricket teams.

Following Alastair Cook’s decision to step down as captain of the test team, the first-ever series clean sweep in the Caribbean will provide more confidence for England Cricket in the year ahead. ODI captain Eoin Morgan will also be impressed about the team’s resilience after losing 2-1 in their 20/20 series with India last month.

Who were the stars of the series?

Alex Hales and Joe Root will no doubt pick up many plaudits for their performances during the series. Hales was truly phenomenal in the final game, putting in an excellent 110 run performance from 107 balls. After being dropped from tests last year and recovering successfully from a hand injury, his star performance could see him return to the test squad later this year.

After missing out on the first game, Joe Root returned to the fold in style with two spectacular performances. His 101 runs in the final game emphasised his abilities as one of the country’s top batsmen, while captain Eoin Morgan pulled off a century in the first game and continued the fine form he's been experiencing in recent months.

All-rounder Chris Woakes racked up seven wickets and a pivotal 68 not out to secure the second day win, highlighting his importance as a reliable partner to Stokes and his explosive batting.

Liam Plunkett also had a great series, ending up as the leading wicket taker with ten. As a player who is often on the fringe of the team, his performances could help him become a key asset for England going forward.

    What about the West Indies?

While England will no doubt be happy with their display, the West Indies proved to be a disappointing opponent.

With excellent players such as Jason Holder, Evin Lewis and Kraigg Braithwate, England were expecting a tough contest over the series.

In particular, Holder - the team’s captain - scored a test century against England in 2015 and the all-rounder had a lot to prove coming into the games. As the West Indies battled to improve their ranking, even a 2-1 loss would have given them a boost, but they simply weren’t a match for England.

Fingers will now be pointed at the inexperience of the side as the team attempts to rebuild. The 20/20 series against Pakistan later this month could be pivotal in winning over support and re-establishing themselves as a force in the sport.

    What will England do next?

The victory will leave England’s ODI team full of confidence as they head back home and prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy in June.

Ireland will be the next opponents on May 5th, before the South Africa tour begins on May 24th that will certainly test the credentials of the current setup. It will then be on to the Champions Trophy and matches against Bangladesh, Australia and New Zealand in Group A.

At the moment, South Africa stand on top of the ODI rankings, followed by Australia, New Zealand and India as England sit in fifth. South Africa will certainly go into the Champions Trophy as favourites, but with strong home support, Eoin Morgan and his team will be setting their eyes on keeping the silverware at home.
