  • Day 7

    Napier

Check out of your hotel this morning and you will be transferred to Hawke's Bay, one of New Zealand’s warmest, driest regions and one of the country’s leading producers of wine. The journey from Rotorua to Napier will take approximately three hours. On arrival into Napier, check in to the Nautilus Napier for a two night stay on a bed and breakfast basis.

A national disaster resulted in Napier becoming one of the purest Art Deco cities in the world. On the morning of February 3rd 1931, a massive earthquake rocked Hawke's Bay. Nearly 260 lives were lost and the vast majority of buildings in the commercial centre of Napier were destroyed. Rebuilding began almost immediately, and much of it was completed in two years and today the city is famous for its beautifully preserved 1930s architecture. Maori motifs were employed to give the city a unique New Zealand character - for example, the ASB bank on the corner of Hastings and Emerson Streets features Maori koru and zigzags.

Today, why not book an afternoon of wine tasting as an optional excursion and enjoy the celebrated Hawke's Bay wine region (12noon to 5pm.) Your guide will accompany you to their favourite vineyards and share their knowledge of the wine, scenery and history of the region.
