The home of British motorsport, the Silverstone Grand Prix, is perhaps one of the most prestigious races on the F1 calendar, and Gullivers Sports Travel were there with hundreds of excited F1 fans enjoying every moment!
Arriving throughout the day on Friday, our guests were checked into their hotels all within a short distance of the circuit, on a convenient radius depending on where in the country they were travelling from.
Bright and early on Saturday, we were up ready to get to the circuit welcoming guests on their coach transfers, ready to soak up all the action, not just from Formula 1, but F2, F3, Porsche Super Cup and W-Series too! Silverstone is famous for it’s ‘festival’ atmosphere, with the emphasis of the whole weekend on world-class entertainment, on track and off track, and is now a ‘must-have’ ticket for any sports enthusiast. At the base of every Grandstand around the circuit there is an array of shops, food stalls, entertainment, bars and mini fan-zones, each one to be explored and all with its own festival atmosphere. Silverstone has an atmosphere like no other Grand Prix, and from the moment you arrive in the race-traffic whichever day you arrive, you are submerged in another world full of likeminded F1 enthusiasts, where it doesn't matter who you support, everyone can be unapologetically themselves and enjoy the weekend as one.
If you were in a Grandstand on the Saturday at Silverstone, then you’ll understand how different the climate felt being elevated off the ground. Blanket sales in the shops at the circuit must have soared before Qualifying as the wind ripped through the grandstands creating quite a chill amongst the fans ready to watch their favourite drivers fight for pole-position! Such a contrast from the temperatures on the ground where the chilly wind was nowhere to be found!
Just as predicted, but perhaps optimistically denied by all spectators, the rain started to pour just 5 minutes before Q1 began. What is predictable about England is how unpredictable the British weather can be. The 2021 Silverstone weekend was in the middle of a blistering heatwave with severe weather-warnings, but in 2022; the rain made itself known, even into our shoes and socks, by the end of Q3.
Like Monaco ’22, the rain could not (and did not) dampen our spirits, and the Gullivers Travel clients were well equipped with free our ponchos, with most also bringing emergency umbrellas for just this eventuality!
Whether you are a Lewis Hamilton fan or not, the atmosphere buzzing around him the entire weekend filled everybody with excited energy. Whenever he sped past, the crowd erupted with the same enthusiasm each and every lap. Silverstone really is a special Circuit for Lewis, and from the crowd reaction you can really understand why it means so much to him. After this weekend, Lewis has now achieved his 13th F1 podium here, (and 10th consecutive podium at Silverstone) - the most podiums achieved at a single circuit by any driver.
After a good night’s sleep, we were back at the circuit even earlier on race day, with the crowd seemingly doubling in size from Saturday to Sunday. The Silverstone track is just under 6 kilometres in length and set within an area of over 700 acres – so you can really get your steps in over the weekend!
Another moment of celebration came as quite a surprise for most, when Latifi made it to Q3 for the very first time – delighting the crowd, quite unexpectedly, with his great performance in the wet!
Once Sebastian Vettel delighted his fans with a ‘lap of honour’ in his 1992 Williams FW14B, raced and won in by Nigel Mansell, and the drivers each being chauffeured around the circuit in classic cars for the Drivers Parade, it was time for the racing to get underway. Race control had the risk of rain at 20% for the duration, but the clouds disappeared, leaving everyone thankful for a dry race.
There was drama as soon as the lights went out with 2 separate incidents at Turn 1 involving Russell, Gasly, Guanyu, Vettel, Ocon, Tsunoda and Albon. Zhou Guanyu’s incident was truly horrifying and thankfully made a very lucky escape, with huge praise going to the marshals and George Russell who both ran towards danger to ensure the quick and safe recovery of their driver and friend.
After a 45 minutes red-flag, the FIA announced that the race would see a standing restart, with the grid reset to its original positions, with Zhou, Albon and Russell now ruled out, and those who enjoyed a good getaway first time round had to do it all over again, disappointing Lewis Hamilton fans as he had gained great position at the first start!
2 race starts, red flags and a horrifying crash later, the race resumed with Carlos Sainz in the lead into the first corner. The race was later quoted as being one of the best races in recent years. There was drama throughout with insane overtakes by Lewis, Charles and Perez passing and re-passing each other, tight battles all the way through the mid-field involving an epic battle between Mick and Max, at one point there were 5 cars battling for position and hustling for points. The loudest cheer from the crowd came where Hamilton seized the opportunity to squeeze past Leclerc and Perez whilst they were fighting for position around Luffield, taking 2nd position whilst speeding past the roaring grandstand at Woodcote.
Sainz was left angered when instructed to allow his team-mate to have ‘breathing room’. Ignoring team-orders, instead he attacked Charles’ Ferrari and passed into Brooklands to retake the lead. “I’m going much faster than Charles” was his justification, and it’s that killer instinct that secured Carlos his maiden win in Formula 1 150 race starts later, converting his Saturday’s Pole position to 1st place Podium position.
Carlos had the second longest wait for a win in F1 history, behind Perez, who was delighted with his recovery from P16 to his finish at P2 – and who also awarded the fans ‘Driver of the Day’ award, but the biggest cheers were reserved for Hamilton, who took P3 in front of his home crowd. Finishing in P8, Mick Schumacher scored his first ever career points in Formula 1, which was a wonderful moment and there can’t be a F1 fan in attendance who was not delighted for him.
We celebrated such a fantastic weekend with our supporters at Silverstone. It is proven every year by our staff and customers that this is one of the best atmospheres in F1, and we cannot wait to return next year! Carlos Sainz sums up our thoughts here: “I cannot ask for more. It’s a very special day, a day that I will never forget, a very special weekend in general."
