England take on New Zealand in Wellington on Friday (February 20th).

England head to Wellington on Friday (February 20th) to take on New Zealand looking to bounce back from an "embarrassing" opening World Cup defeat.

Eoin Morgan's men were blasted by former batting coach and captain Graham Gooch following their 111-run loss by Australia. England had been performing well during the match but a disastrous final ten overs saw the hosts smash 105 runs with Glenn Maxwell making 66 off just 40 balls setting England a target they simply could not match.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Gooch described the way England let Australia freely score was "embarrassing" but has faith that Morgan will be able to guide the side to improved performances throughout the tournament. The England captain was unable to score any points against the Aussies as they were bowled out for 231 as Mitchell Marsh took five wickets.

Gooch told the radio station: "He's [Morgan] in a bad run but he's a match-winning player and England desperately need him to be leading the way. Morgan's a bit vulnerable outside off-stump but he should retain his attacking instincts - that where his skills lie."

In the searing heat of the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground, England wilted. They were unable to contain the batting of Aaron Finch who hit a huge 135. Alongside Maxwell's 66, George Bailey scored 55 as he combined with Finch to create a stand of 146. The 342/9 was simply too much for England to overcome.

Mitchell tore through the England batting taking Ian Bell, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Gary Ballance and captain Morgan for minimal scores. Only James Taylor emerged with any credibility after posting a score of 98.

The defeat was not the start England would have wanted and was their second heaviest defeat ever at the World Cup. They now face another host nation in front of another boisterous home crowd, this time in Wellington.

New Zealand have started the competition in strong fashion picking up an impressive 98 run victory against Sri Lanka in their opening match. They followed this up by brushing aside Scotland, making the chase total in just 24.5 overs. They will be looking for another scalp when England roll into town.

The 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup has already thrown up a number of shocks with the biggest coming in Nelson when Ireland scored a four-wicket triumph over the West Indies. Zimbabwe were also given a scare by the United Arab Emirates before emerging with a win by four wickets.
