On the 27th May 2022 Gullivers took a record amount of guests to enjoy a fantastic weekend of racing in the most glamorous and iconic destination on the F1 calendar, the historic street circuit of Monaco, securing its position firmly as the most popular Grand-prix on our calendar!
Upon arriving at the airport on the Friday, the atmosphere was already electric and filled with excited fans ready to spend their weekend soaking up the sun, sea and speed in the south of France. The flight time to Monaco is just under two hours, and was a great opportunity to talk race tactics, team orders and driver news with other likeminded people, as well as swapping tips on the best restaurants, bars and beaches for your stay.
Our guests were accommodated in a choice of hotels across Nice, Cannes and Monaco itself, depending on their preference, with different travel options into the principality for the Qualifying and Race days. All of our guests were welcomed into their hotels with complimentary drinks and a opportunity to spend time with a Gullivers representative to ask any questions about their trip, the weekend itineraries, the City, the sport, or just take the chance to have a chat and get to know us!
We took our guests into Monaco on private coaches on the Saturday morning, with the alternate option to catch a train, both staffed & signposted by Gullivers staff along the way. The 'Fan-Zone' is located at Place d'Armes, which signposts all the Grandstands & Secteur Rocher, with pop up bars, outdoor seating, a busy indoor food market, and bustling alleys, stairways and streets full of merchandise, food and plenty of drink! It really is the perfect base before you enter the Circuit and enjoy your weekend race schedule!
Saturday’s Qualifying action was raced under a tyre-melting 27-degree heat through the famous streets, resulting in Charles Leclerc securing his second consecutive Pole at his home Grand Prix. The atmosphere around the city was electric, and expectation weighed heavily on Charles intense hopes of him finally breaking his ‘Monaco curse’ the following day.
After a fantastic, and baking hot, day in Monaco, our guests took the return coach or train back to their hotels, with some staying to enjoy the beautiful harbour for the evening! For many of our guests this was their first experience of F1, and what a location for your first Grand Prix! All the talk on the way back into France was on Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, and as our guests filtered away to enjoy their evenings the buzz was building for tomorrows race!
A slightly earlier start on race day meant we could arrive in the Principality by 8am, to enjoy a packed schedule of events at the track, with the option of a train for those who desired a more relaxed start to their Sunday!
The inevitability of rain on Sunday caused havoc for the teams and their strategies, with many last-minute changes just before the planned start at 3pm. The uncertainty initiated a rumbling of growing excitement from the grandstand, with hopes for an even more thrilling race in the wet weather, but with the loom of Charles’ ‘curse’ growing with the darkening clouds above the mountains, the excitement turned to dread for the Ferrari driver, knowing how unpredictable a race can be in wet conditions.
Due to the extreme weather, the session was red flagged between the formation lap and ‘lights out’ for just under an hour. After a rolling start and many frantic tyre changes later, we witnessed a shortened race of 64 laps out of 77 and ultimately ending in utter heartbreak once again for the Monégasque driver, Charles Leclerc, who could not convert his Saturday’s Pole position to Sunday’s podium at his home Grand-Prix, putting his dreams to win at home on hold for another year.
Unexpectedly, the chequered flag crowned Sergio Perez the race winner, the third ever win for the Mexican driver, securing his place at Red Bull for another few years!
After both days on the track, the Circuit opens to the public in the evening and you get the amazing opportunity to walk the 2.074 miles around the famous streets, still with pieces of tyres and skid marks on the road. It really gives you a chance to get up close and personal with what it must be like for the drivers bustling for position when its Lights Out, walking every twist, turn and corner, feeling the enclosing barriers around you, and the echos through the tunnel as you walk out down to Nouvelle Chicane and come face to face with the magnificent Yachts in the famous Port Hercule. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and an absolute 'must-do' for your trip to the Monaco Grand Prix!
The atmosphere walking the track was indescribable on both evenings, with a party atmosphere all the way round! Excited fans taking pictures sitting in Pole Position, running around the famous Casio Square, touching the barriers and buffers at La Rascasse and entering the marina and walking next to the Yachts trying to spot any famous faces! The streets were filled with fans singing and partying, celebrating the result they wanted or just celebrating being in Monaco to experience this fantastic weekend
Monday saw a gentle departure of guests onto their flights home, all excitedly exchanging stories of their weekend. Listening to our clients talking so positively about their experiences with us fills us with drive to continue doing our best, and fuels our passion for live events.
Despite the entire Tifosi and the fans in Monaco not getting their desired result, the spirit of the weekend wasn’t dampened even after that very wet start! Gullivers celebrated a fantastic and successful weekend with our F1 customers and can’t wait to be back next year!
