Let’s start with this – The Ryder Cup is the best sporting event I have ever been to. (That compares against the Lions tour, Ashes, Champions League, World Cups and more). Don’t be fooled though from watching on the sofa, supporting Europe at the Ryder Cup is hard work – early starts, miles of walking, late finishes, nerve-wracking drama – but trust me, it’s so worth it.

The trip started with a flight out to Minnesota from London Heathrow – needless to say the flight was full of European Ryder Cup fans, full of expectation after three successive wins but uncertain of how the six rookies would perform against a self-titled ‘best ever’ US team. Arriving into Minnesota it was only a short drive into Downtown St Paul, the place we would call home for the next five nights. St Paul was ready for us with excellent US hospitality and it wasn’t long before many of the fans were enjoying the local beers and mixing with the US fans.

The first early start came at 6.30am on Thursday for practice. Whilst everyone chooses to enjoy golf in their own way, I headed to the range to watch the players warm up. As an avid fan and regular golfer myself, to see how far these players are hitting the ball is mesmerising. They study every shot they make and we were there to see it all. The European players seemed very relaxed as we followed them round, happy to sign autographs and pose for photos. The US team seemed less relaxed, yet Phil Mickleson showed his continued class both on and off the course with his welcome to the fans and excellent play. The morning was extremely cold with a mist ensuring that the players were in bobble hats – by the afternoon the sun was out and the warm sun shining, ready for the opening ceremonies and the opening of the Ryder Cup. The US National Anthem and subsequent fly-over left everyone with goosebumps, simply amazing. In the evening we all headed to the celebration party which was fantastic, outdoors on an island in the middle of the Mississippi we danced the night away to a fantastic band and incredible local food and drink, the smores were to die for!

Friday morning saw an even earlier start with many on the 6am transfer to the course. Upon arrival at Hazeltine National there was a magical mist lingering over the course. The crowd was pumped up as the players approached the first tee for what has been called the most nerve-wracking shot in golf. I watched the four groups come down the first before heading over to the 6th and the 16th. After a tough first morning, the European team made a fantastic comeback in the afternoon to quieten down the raucous US crowd.

Saturday morning was a good morning for the Europeans and the players were really fired up with the Spanish duo of Garcia and Rafa Cabrero-Abello leading from the front. The US crowd were very vocal, a small minority over-stepping the mark which was a shame and something that we aren’t used to in Europe with the European fans sometimes shocked at the lack of sportsmanship showed. Still, in the afternoon, the European team didn’t do a lot for the European fans to cheer for leaving us a seemingly uphill task on Sunday, a repeat of the miracle of Medinah would certainly be required.

Sunday afforded the fans a slight lie-in with play not starting until 11.04am. I headed straight to the bleachers on the 6th green to see all 12 groups through; the play was out of this world with birdie after birdie being made. Whilst we were certainly the minority, the European fans made themselves heard and the players showed their appreciation. Unfortunately it just wasn’t to be, the American team played fantastically well and deserved the win.

With a night flight on Monday we all had some time to rest, relax and enjoy St Paul, Minneapolis and The Mall of America before heading back to the UK.

A short trip over to the United States, we left without the result we would have wished for but with many memories, (some sunburn) and many wonderful photos from a beautiful course in fantastic ‘fall’ weather. We now look forward to Paris in two years’ time where we will try and win back the Cup…
